About this guide: This is a practical general guide, not a certification of a particular game or device. Our approach
The offline test that actually answers your question
Finish setup while connected, save safely, close the game and relaunch it with mobile data and Wi-Fi unavailable. Reach the mode you want, play far enough to save, then reopen that save while still offline.
That is more useful than turning off the internet for a moment inside an already running session. It tests the start and return journey you may need away from a connection. It is still a result for that app version, device and setup—not a guarantee about every future update or account.
1. Complete downloads and account setup first
Install updates, launch the game and finish any required initial setup while you still have a reliable connection. Open the level, campaign or content pack you plan to use; an app reaching its main menu does not prove that its playable content is ready.
If the publisher documents a licence check, sign-in or extra download, complete it through the normal supported process. This checklist is not a way around an online requirement. If a feature needs a server, plan another activity for periods when you cannot reach it.
2. Make sure airplane mode really means no internet
Turn on airplane mode and explicitly check that Wi-Fi is off. Google's Android guidance explains that wireless settings can be remembered, so Wi-Fi may remain available in airplane mode. The airplane icon by itself is not enough evidence that your test is offline.
Disconnect other internet connections you may be using as well. Bluetooth input is a separate question from an internet connection: choose the controls you intend to use, but verify that the phone is not still reaching the network through Wi-Fi. Follow Google's airplane-mode guidance for the settings on supported devices.
3. Start the game again and test the exact mode
Save through the game's supported method and return to its menu before closing it. Relaunch while disconnected. Try the actual campaign, level or downloaded expansion that matters to you.
Separate the result by feature. A campaign working does not establish that multiplayer, a seasonal event, advertisements or an account service will work. Equally, an unavailable leaderboard does not necessarily mean a local campaign is unusable. Write down what succeeds and what asks for a connection instead of reducing everything to a single yes or no.
4. Check that progress survives a restart
Create a small piece of progress, save normally, close and reopen the game while still offline. Confirm that the expected progress is present. Do not clear app storage, uninstall the game or interrupt a save merely to perform this test.
If the game offers documented backups, make one before experimenting with important progress. When you reconnect, check the publisher's instructions before choosing between conflicting local and cloud saves. Offline play and cloud recovery are separate capabilities; one does not establish the other.
5. Check paid content and account-dependent features
If you need an expansion or permanent unlock, test access to that particular item while offline. Leave buying, restoring purchases and managing subscriptions for a connection unless the publisher expressly documents another process.
A successful offline launch does not prove that a time-limited entitlement will remain available indefinitely. Read the current terms for the edition you use. If a game's purchase labels are confusing, start with Android in-app purchases explained.
How much should you trust an Offline store label?
A current store label is a useful lead, not a personal device test. For example, Slay the Spire's Android listing is labelled Offline, but you should still confirm your initial setup, chosen mode and saving before relying on it for travel.
This is why we distinguish publisher documentation from testing. We have not run the five-step test on your device, and this article does not certify every game in our mobile shortlist as offline-compatible.
Keep a small record and retest when it matters
Record the game name, app version, device, date, mode tested, whether it launched without a connection and whether the save reopened. A simple note such as “campaign opened and my new save loaded; online event unavailable” is more useful than an unexplained “works offline.”
Repeat the relevant checks after a significant app update, device change or new content download. If the game cannot meet your travel needs, use our game-selection checklist to make connection requirements part of your next shortlist.
